Umkhaya functional boma

Introducing the Knapse Kêrel Umkhaya Boma. This fire-breathing piece of functional art takes its name from the knob thorn tree (Senegalia nigrescens), a familiar and majestic sight across South Africa. Umkhaya also means “home” in Zulu — a fitting name for a product designed to come alive where people gather. From family braais and nail-biting rugby matches to evenings around the fire while camping, the Umkhaya brings serious heat and unforgettable atmosphere wherever it’s lit.

Effortlessly mobile.

Designed for effortless transport, the Knapse Kêrel Umkhaya packs down in minutes, making it easy to take wherever your adventures lead.

Built in coal maker

Four large holes at the base, combined with a dedicated coal pan, allow the Knapse Kêrel Umkhaya to create a spectacular fire while generating hot coals in minutes, ready to be used at another braai spot.

Utilitarian

The Knapse Kêrel Umkhaya includes a highly durable stainless steel grid, transforming this bespoke boma into your go-to braai spot.

Traditional

If potjie or traditional pap is on the menu, the Knapse Kêrel Umkhaya delivers. Included as standard is a sturdy pot stand that sits securely on the outer rim of the boma.

Breathtaking

A spectacle with every use. The Knapse Kêrel Umkhaya breathes fire and ignites the atmosphere, no matter the occasion.

Senegalia Nigrescens

The knobthorn tree can be found throughout the Kruger National Park and is easily recognised by the distinctive knobs on its trunk and branches, from which sharp thorns protrude—giving the tree its name. In spring, it produces beautiful yellow-white flowers that add to its striking appearance.
